Does this thought go through your head?  ”Wow, I can not WAIT to buy a new thermal print head!”  No?  Me neither.  Like you, we fight the purchase until it is a must.  Sometimes, though, the hard part is telling when it is a must.

At the risk of over-simplifying this problem, there is truly one tell-tale symptom that screams “replace me now!”  If you have a sharp vertical line running through your print in the same location on every print, your printhead is shot.  Buy a new one.

If this is not the case, you are moving on to troubleshooting.

-Black poorly defined lines:  Commonly caused by residue on the printhead or in the print path.

-Uneven darkness:  Dark on one side but light on the other?  There is a good chance your head pressure is uneven.  This can be worn platen roller, uneven head pressure or your media is not running the full width of the platen roller causing the uneven pressure.

-Print is not dark enough:  You could be using the wrong ribbon for the substrate your are printing on.  -Also, your heat/energy setting could be set too low.

-Diagonal lines running through your print:  Ooh, we don’t like this one.  There can be multiple causes including a worn platen roller, improper (uneven) head pressure, alignment of your strip, thick media and more.  If you are using an external rewinder, too much torque or uneven alignment can cause issues.
